Post-Lab Evaluation

Lab 13 - Priory Navigation 2 + Paintball Guns

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 4

2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert) 5

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree) 5

Easily the most fun lab of the semester. I might even suggest doing paintball with the map/compass navigation somehow. It would be intense to have to get your bearings to each point while being on the look out for other teams. Either way, it was great and had a lot of critical thinking and teamwork elements.

Lab 12 - Priory Navigation 1

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 3

This was another one of my favorite labs. Map and compass navigation is a lot of fun, and a good skill to have. It's especially satisfying doing it with a map I created myself. It's like making cookies from scratch vs cookies from a box.

Lab 10 and 11 - Aerial Mapping with a UAS

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 2

2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert) 3

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree) 4

The most difficult part of this activity was learning how to mosaic, which ended up not being that difficult once Drew explained it. I would have been fumbling around for a long time otherwise, so I think going over that a little more in lecture would have been nice.

Lab 9 - Campus Mall Total Station Survey

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 1

2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert) 3

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree) 5

This lab was interesting and I did enjoy it, but the Total Station is a pretty complicated piece of equipment. The explanation seemed rushed, and it wasn't easy to hear or see what was going on when 20 people were crowded around one unit.

Lab 8 - Campus Microclimates

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 2

2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert) 4

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree) 5

I thought this was a really good exercise. Doing everything from building the geodatabase to collecting the data to analyzing it felt like a complete package, and was satisfying when I had maps completed. I learned about climate patterns on a small scale, practiced collecting data on a Trimble, used plenty of GIS skills, and did some critical thinking. I wouldn't change much about this one.

Lab 7 - UAS Field Day

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 1

2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert) 2

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree) 4

This was a nice, relaxing day, which wasn't bad at all. It was the first time I got to see a multicopter in action, which was pretty cool. I like trying out the rocket, just to see if it would work. It's great to learn different ways people currently collect data, but it's also pretty interesting to experiment with new ways of doing it (even if it didn't work out that great). I don't feel I learned as much about UASs as much as in other labs, since we were mainly standing around watching, but it was a good introduction and a good way to spend a nice day as a class.

Lab 6 - Microclimate Geodatabase Construction

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 4

2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert) 4

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree) 4

Having taken plenty GIS and mapping classes, this wasn't really new to me. However, it's been a while since I've set up domains, so that was a helpful refresher. What was most helpful for this lab was having time to think about what data we were trying to collect and how to go about it.

Lab 5 - Creating a Field Navigation Map

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 3

This was a great lab. I really like making maps, but this is the first time that I have made a map that would be put to practical use, not just put on a poster or in a powerpoint presentation. It made it that much more important to be accurate and usable.

Lab 4 - Distance Azimuth Survey

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 1

I have never really used a rangefinder of any kind, so this was a helpful lab. It's pretty easy to do. I think it's great to have this prior to some of the other labs like the Total Station. It introduced us to basic, but important, ideas like azimuth and magnetic declination. It would have been nice to talk more about magnetic declination, though. It isn't really a factor here in Eau Claire, but it can be a pretty big issue other places.

Lab 3 - Unmanned Aerial System Mission Plannning

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree) 3

This one didn't seem very helpful. I knew nothing about UASs before, so it was awfully difficult to plan these scenarios with the little knowledge I had. I just felt like I was guessing at everything. This lab would make much more sense if it was one of the last labs of the semester, after we have been introduced to all of these different times of UASs.

Labs 1 and 2 - Terrain Survey

1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic. (1-No Knowledge at atll, 2-Very Little Knowledge, 3-Some knowledge, 4-A good amount of knowledge, 5-I knew all about this) 3

2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic (1- I don’t really know enough to talk about the topic, 2- I know enough to explain what I did, 3-I know enough to repeat what I did, 4-I know enough to teach someone else, 5- I am an expert) 4

3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn (1-Strongly Disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-No real opinion, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly Agree)

I did enjoy this lab, and thought it was a good way to start the class. I did feel like were sort of thrown into it without much instruction, though I think that was the point. The brutal cold was the only issue. I think the same thing could have been done on a smaller scale using little sand boxes and water (or something similar) indoors when weather is that bad. I would have put more effort into the actual survey if I would have had any feeling in my extremities.
